History of Music Videos Research

A music video is a short film/video that accompanies a complete piece of music/song.

Today i learnt the background to the history of music videos.

I found that many videos during the 1960's were very basic with minimal camera shots and backgrounds and mise en scene.

I looked at this video called 'House of the rising sun" which shows how it wasn't very interesting or imaginative as music videos are today.

Videos now are used to promote the artists and their songs more than they were in the 60's were they were used to fill in on, if the artists were unavailable to perform live.

During the 1980's the word 'music video' came into fashion. Before this they were called 'film inserts/promotions (promo) or film clip'.

Lee De Forest was one of the first people to creates these musical short videos during in 1923/4.
Big known artists such as the beetles gathered these ideas and created music videos, such as the Beatles who created a music video which was also a type of documentary.

From 1967 colour music films came into fashion, e.g
Beatles- Strawberry fields forever.

There are also a range of music videos, such as Bob Dylan - Subterranean homesick blues were he simply shuffles que cards in the video.
