Rap Music

1990's rap music changed from the basic form.
East Coast - Aggressive - Wu Tang Klan
West Coast - Laid back approach - Tu Pac

West Coast-
NWA (1986) - Eazy E, Ice Cube, Dr Dre
Eazy E and Dr Dre had a dispute meaning that Dr Dre left the brand and created his own in 1996.

NWA created aggressive lyrics promoting crime and violence

West Coast and East Coast dispute lead to Tu Pac being shot.

Notorious B.I.G. signed to Bad Boy records
He was shot in 1997 after Tu Pac

Late 90's - 2000

Dr Dre signed Eminem - diversity of race

Puff Daddy refused to sign 50 Cent as he brought a gun to the studio, so 50 cent was signed to Dr Dre

Rap started to become less aggressive

British development created its own sub-genre- Grime based on rap.

Dizee Rascal + N Dubz use style from the American rap scene.

Collaborations with popo artists, created more focus on  beats and lyrics and reduction of violence.

Tilly & The Wall

Tilly and The Wall are a indie-pop group who premote them self as a band, with no drummer but a tap-dancer instead.
As indie-pop is a niche market, which doesn't really appeal to everyone, to re brand I think they should turn to Pop music, which has a wider audience with a better target market.

There unique point of no drummer but a tap dancer, should be changed as it would not suit the theme of pop. This will also contribute to get more of an audience.

They can also go to CD signings, perform at festivals, go on TV chat shows, open a online blog, upload videos on social networking sites like Myspace and Facebook.

Their target audience would be both genders but mainly girls, ages 13-25.
Their clothes currently are bold and colorful, they should keep it but tone down a bit.

They can appear on TV Stations like MTV, BBC, and various other music channels.
They can play songs on BBC Radio 1, XFM, KISS, Capital FM.

Chris Cunningham

Chris Cunningham is a british film director (auter) who directs music videos and television adverts.

His work is all very similar as they are unique to a specific genre. they consist of horror, sci-fi and thriller. His videos are quite dull and dark, and loves using effects to exaggerate things, e.g. a person falling and cracking into birds.

Come To Daddy - Chris Cunningham

The video genre is jungle, aggrotech and techno. The video represents genre characteristics because the set is quite dull

Michael Jackson

Today looking at some Michael Jackson videos, i found that they have many notions in them.

I analyzed the video with these 7 questions tried to find out:
1. How the video represents genre characteristics
2. Relationship between lyrics and visual
3. Relationship between music and visuals
4.Visual Style
5. Notion of looking
6. Intertextuality
7. Performance/narrative/concept based?

We watched.....
Billie Jean
Beat It
Thriller
Black or White

I found the Black or White video more interesting as it had more meaning in it, and more reference of relationship between lyrics and the visual, and a representation of genre.
