Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwins theory consists of 7 ideas:
1, Genre characteristics
2, What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?
3, What is the relationship between music and visuals?
4, Are there close ups or the artist and star image motifs
5, Is there reference to the notion of looking? (voyeurism)
6, Are there intertextual references?
7, Is it performance, narrative or concept based?

Looking at the video Coffee and TV - blur

The genre characteristics are that the band is wanting to be seen as calm, in their video showing them maybe having a band practice rather than performance for the camera to show us they aren't very mainstream but are normal people with talent.

The relationship between lyrics and visual, is show by the narrative and the milk carton, while the song says 'we can start over again' we maybe see the milk carton trying to find a new start.

The star image is showing us how they are not wanting to flaunt their stuff like most R&B artists, the band are wearing basic t-shirt and jumpers in their basement rehearsing, we can see all the equipment and instruments showing us it isn't a performance as such and that they are closed people. We see many close ups in the video to show facial expression, especially of the milk carton who has numerous facial expressions based upon Roland Balthes who talks about signs and signifiers.

The video is concept based, due to the journey of the milk carton, however it is also a narrative because of  sub-plot due to the extended story of the female milk carton
