Focus Group

From watching the answers from the focus group, i found that the people being interviewed found the song depressing, and that it was quite normal for the genre, and the song was described as weird and unusual.

When asked for ideas about the video, there was a mixed response. One said it would be quite dark and inside where as the other said that it should be more upbeat and bright maybe outside.

when asked about what the band may look like, they said it would mainly consist of white males, as it is typical of the genre as you wouldn't find it the norm to see an asian person in an indie band, but you would question it either, but in conclusion it would be better to follow the norms is what was said.

For costumes, they said that it should be casual as indie artists are not as likely to go wearing designer clothing as a hip hop or R&B artist would.

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwins theory consists of 7 ideas:
1, Genre characteristics
2, What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?
3, What is the relationship between music and visuals?
4, Are there close ups or the artist and star image motifs
5, Is there reference to the notion of looking? (voyeurism)
6, Are there intertextual references?
7, Is it performance, narrative or concept based?

Looking at the video Coffee and TV - blur

The genre characteristics are that the band is wanting to be seen as calm, in their video showing them maybe having a band practice rather than performance for the camera to show us they aren't very mainstream but are normal people with talent.

The relationship between lyrics and visual, is show by the narrative and the milk carton, while the song says 'we can start over again' we maybe see the milk carton trying to find a new start.

The star image is showing us how they are not wanting to flaunt their stuff like most R&B artists, the band are wearing basic t-shirt and jumpers in their basement rehearsing, we can see all the equipment and instruments showing us it isn't a performance as such and that they are closed people. We see many close ups in the video to show facial expression, especially of the milk carton who has numerous facial expressions based upon Roland Balthes who talks about signs and signifiers.

The video is concept based, due to the journey of the milk carton, however it is also a narrative because of  sub-plot due to the extended story of the female milk carton

Bonnie and Clyde Video Analysis

The video of Bonnie & Clyde by Jay Z and Beyonce is set about a well-known novel based around a love story and a criminal. The video starts with a narrative with the police officers talking at the beginning to set the scene of Beyonce and Jay Z crossing the border and not getting caught as of yet. Suddenly the music starts and we begin to see some star image with the stars names appearing on screen ‘Beyonce’ and ‘Jay Z’ to advertise them. We also see an expensive car (Aston Martin) and nice scenery showing wealth and typical mise en scene used in the R&B genre.

The video has a lot of intertexutality with references of ‘Sex and the City’ to represent glamour and star image of Beyonce as the show is about women being glamorous and sexy. Also the lyrics mention expensive luxury items such as Mercedes cars, Burberry swimwear which all link to the genre of R&B and having a lot of money. Also the main idea of the song is from a novel, which is intertexutality as it is using the ideas from the novel into the song.

The narrative shows links of lyrics to the narrative where we see Beyonce wearing Burberry, which is earlier, mentioned in the song to show off her wealth. The main line in the chorus ‘me and my girlfriend’ is repeated often to emphasize the fact that they are in love, and how it represents the story of Bonnie and Clyde and we see Jay Z and Beyonce looking at the camera together to show us their relationship.

There is also a performance in the video, where Beyonce is provocatively in lingerie on the beach on a sofa and with a horse to create voyeurism, and again when we see her wearing a red hat and red lipstick and just her face in the shot to emphasize her sexiness, especially as red is a lustrous color trying to seduce us.

The genre shows how typical wealth is, which expensive cars, clothes, bags, and sunglasses and props e.g. horses and helicopters.  The genre also usually consists of voyeurism with girls dressing provocatively to gain attention and create star image. Also the characters used e.g. police officers are also typical to R&B music part of an anti-authority view.

Lighting in the scene was mainly natural lighting outdoors, but some scenes used dim lighting to create a sexier mood when Beyonce was salsa dancing, where as a bright light would not be as effective as Beyonce would not stick out as much.

The video also consists of a lot of editing, with a lot of camera angles and transitions. As the beat changes it changes into a new scene/shot at the same time to show continuity. As the music got faster there where more transitions where as when the music was slower there where less transitions. Also as the scenes changed it would fade into the next scene to look more interesting and mysterious rather than neat cut shots with smooth transitions.
Camera angles also help to show the facial expressions of the stars and the police, with close ups to show how Beyonce and Jay Z are happy as they are getting away with the crimes, but the police are shown angry as they cant catch them.

Also the closes up show us views on Beyonce to show voyeurism, and there are high long shots to show the cars on the long roads to show us they are in nice scenery and are rich with nice cars. Also there is a high angle shot of the police helicopter on top of Jay Z to show how the police have more authority over citizens.

Rap Music

1990's rap music changed from the basic form.
East Coast - Aggressive - Wu Tang Klan
West Coast - Laid back approach - Tu Pac

West Coast-
NWA (1986) - Eazy E, Ice Cube, Dr Dre
Eazy E and Dr Dre had a dispute meaning that Dr Dre left the brand and created his own in 1996.

NWA created aggressive lyrics promoting crime and violence

West Coast and East Coast dispute lead to Tu Pac being shot.

Notorious B.I.G. signed to Bad Boy records
He was shot in 1997 after Tu Pac

Late 90's - 2000

Dr Dre signed Eminem - diversity of race

Puff Daddy refused to sign 50 Cent as he brought a gun to the studio, so 50 cent was signed to Dr Dre

Rap started to become less aggressive

British development created its own sub-genre- Grime based on rap.

Dizee Rascal + N Dubz use style from the American rap scene.

Collaborations with popo artists, created more focus on  beats and lyrics and reduction of violence.

Tilly & The Wall

Tilly and The Wall are a indie-pop group who premote them self as a band, with no drummer but a tap-dancer instead.
As indie-pop is a niche market, which doesn't really appeal to everyone, to re brand I think they should turn to Pop music, which has a wider audience with a better target market.

There unique point of no drummer but a tap dancer, should be changed as it would not suit the theme of pop. This will also contribute to get more of an audience.

They can also go to CD signings, perform at festivals, go on TV chat shows, open a online blog, upload videos on social networking sites like Myspace and Facebook.

Their target audience would be both genders but mainly girls, ages 13-25.
Their clothes currently are bold and colorful, they should keep it but tone down a bit.

They can appear on TV Stations like MTV, BBC, and various other music channels.
They can play songs on BBC Radio 1, XFM, KISS, Capital FM.

Chris Cunningham

Chris Cunningham is a british film director (auter) who directs music videos and television adverts.

His work is all very similar as they are unique to a specific genre. they consist of horror, sci-fi and thriller. His videos are quite dull and dark, and loves using effects to exaggerate things, e.g. a person falling and cracking into birds.

Come To Daddy - Chris Cunningham

The video genre is jungle, aggrotech and techno. The video represents genre characteristics because the set is quite dull

Michael Jackson

Today looking at some Michael Jackson videos, i found that they have many notions in them.

I analyzed the video with these 7 questions tried to find out:
1. How the video represents genre characteristics
2. Relationship between lyrics and visual
3. Relationship between music and visuals
4.Visual Style
5. Notion of looking
6. Intertextuality
7. Performance/narrative/concept based?

We watched.....
Billie Jean
Beat It
Thriller
Black or White

I found the Black or White video more interesting as it had more meaning in it, and more reference of relationship between lyrics and the visual, and a representation of genre.

Research Of Concepts

Voyeurism
This is an idea that came from Freud which is about gendered pleasures of cinema. It refers to the idea of looking to gain pleasure.
It is to emphasise peoples sexuality, when in videos men and women are shown sexually as an object.

This idea becomes more complex when we see the male body on display where questions may be raised about how a female may react, to when a male will react when a female is on show.

Narrative and Performance
With the development of technology, music videos are able to become more detailed and interesting. Following this it means that the videos can tell a narrative story where the words are acted out in some way usually used in slower songs.
A performance allows the artists to record different things e.g. socialising in the park etc. and record it for the video purpose.

My Own Research From Music Videos In This Era

I researched this video from the 1960's by Ronettes - Be My Baby

I found that this video was very similar to other music videos that I had found. The common things I saw were that the camera shots which were all basic, a neutral background, background dancers, minimal dance moves.

I also found this video of Dusty Springfield - I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself.
Again in this video it is very basic and in black and white. In this video there are no dancers and a bit more of an interesting backdrop.

History of Music Videos Research

A music video is a short film/video that accompanies a complete piece of music/song.

Today i learnt the background to the history of music videos.

I found that many videos during the 1960's were very basic with minimal camera shots and backgrounds and mise en scene.

I looked at this video called 'House of the rising sun" which shows how it wasn't very interesting or imaginative as music videos are today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmdPQp6Jcdk

Videos now are used to promote the artists and their songs more than they were in the 60's were they were used to fill in on, if the artists were unavailable to perform live.

During the 1980's the word 'music video' came into fashion. Before this they were called 'film inserts/promotions (promo) or film clip'.

Lee De Forest was one of the first people to creates these musical short videos during in 1923/4.
Big known artists such as the beetles gathered these ideas and created music videos, such as the Beatles who created a music video which was also a type of documentary.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtgZvuRaafU&feature=related

From 1967 colour music films came into fashion, e.g
Beatles- Strawberry fields forever.

There are also a range of music videos, such as Bob Dylan - Subterranean homesick blues were he simply shuffles que cards in the video.

Audience Feedback Whilst Editing

Throughout the editing process, we gathered as much feedback from friends, classmates and our target audience so that we were constantly creating a product that was engaging and effective. We also done this whilst creating out ancillary texts, which needed more feedback, for example advice on where things would look better placed e.g. album name etc

The audience feedback really helped while trying to edit the video, but did lead to some differences from what was originally planned in the animatic story board.

Overall it all helped to create our final products
